Dancing Aspen Beanie (3-6 months)-A Free Pattern

The Dancing Aspen Beanie is a 2 layered beanie that is sure to keep your little one nice and toasty now that it is starting to get cooler out. The bottom hat layer is a fitted beanie and the second overlay layer is a more lacy and open stitch that allows the color from the main hat to be seen through the openings in it. The color possibilities are endless with this hat, so have fun with it!!

 

Dancing Aspen Beanie (3-6 months)

Materials Needed:

  • 120 yards worsted weight yarn in 2 or more colors
  • I hook (5.5 mm)
  • J hook (6 mm)
  • Measuring tape
  • Yarn needle
  • Scissors
  • Pom pom maker (optional)

Gauge: 14 sc x 16 rows= 4 inches

Stitch Glossary: YO-yarn over, ch-chain, st-stitch, sk-skip, sc-single crochet, sc dec-single crochet decrease, fsc-foundation single crochet, spike hdc-spike half double crochet, hdc dec-half double crochet decrease, dc-double crochet, CL-cluster, BLO-back loop only

Special Stitches:

Cluster– (YO. Insert hook in specified st and draw up a loop. YO and draw through 2 loops on hook) x4 YO and draw through all 5 loops.

Spike hdc– Half double crochet in the indicated row

Pattern Instructions:

Round 1: With I hook and main color, Fsc 47. Using the joining technique listed above in the special stitches section, join. (48)

Round 2: Ch 1. Sc in the same st as the ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join to the first st. (48)

Round 3: With contrasting color, ch 1. Sc in the same st as the ch 1. Spike hdc one row below the next st. *Sc in the next st. Spike hdc one row below the next st.* Repeat from * to * around. Join to the first st. (48)

Round 4: With the main color, ch 1. Sc in the same st as the ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join to the first st. (48)

Round 5: Repeat Round 2. (48)

Round 6: Ch 1. Working in the BLO, hdc in the same st as the ch 1. Hdc in each st around. Join to the first st. (48)

Round 7-11: Ch 1 . Hdc in the same st as the ch 1. Hdc in each st around. Join to the first st. (48)

Round 12: Ch 1. Hdc in the same st as the ch 1. Hdc in the next 3 st. Hdc dec over the next 2 st. *Hdc in the next 4 st. Hdc dec over the next 2 st.* Repeat from * to * around until 4 st remain. Hdc in the next 2 st. Hdc dec over the last 2 st. Join to the first st. (38)

Round 13: Ch 1. Hdc in the same st as the ch 1. Hdc in the next 2 st. Hdc dec over the next 2 st. *Hdc in the next 3 st. Hdc dec over the next 2 st.* Repeat from * to * around until 3 st remain. Hdc in the next st. Hdc dec over the last 2 st. Join to the first st. (30)

Round 14: Ch 1. Hdc in the same st as the ch 1. Hdc in the next st. Hdc dec over the next 2 st. *Hdc in the next 2 st. Hdc dec over the next 2 st.* Repeat from * to * around until 2 st remain. Hdc dec over the last 2 st. Join to the first st. (22)

Round 15: Ch 1. Hdc in the same st as the ch 1. Hdc dec over the next 2 st. *Hdc in the next st. Hdc dec over the next 2 st.* Repeat from * to * around until 1 st remains. Hdc in the last st. Join to the first st. (15)

Round 16: Ch 1. Hdc dec around until 1 st remains. Hdc in the last st. Join to the first st. Fasten off leaving a long tail to cinch the top closed. Cinch the top of the hat closed. Go to Overlay Section.

Round 1: With J hook and contrasting color, join with a sc to the first front loop leftover from Round 5 of the main hat. Ch 3. Sk 2 st. CL in the next st. Ch 3. Sk 2 st. *Sc in the next st. Ch 3. Sk 2 st. CL in the next st. Ch 3. Sk 2 st.* Repeat from * to * around. Join to the first st. (8 CL, 8 sc)

Round 2: Standing dc. Ch 2. Sc in the top of the next CL. Ch 2. *Dc in the next sc. Ch 2. Sc in the top of the next CL. Ch 2.* Repeat from * to * around. Join to the first st. (8 dc, 8 sc)

Round 3: Ch 1. Sc in the same st as the ch 1. 2 sc in the next ch 2 space. *Sc in the next st. 2 sc in the next ch 2 space.* Repeat from * to * around. Join to the first st. (48)

Round 4: Ch 1. Sc in the same st as the ch 1. Sc in each st around. Join to the first st. (48)

Note: I recommend weaving in the end left at the beginning of this section in now.

Round 5: Ch 1. Sc in the same st as the ch 1. Ch 3. Sk 2 st. CL in the next st. Ch 3. Sk 2 st. *Sc in the next st. Ch 3. Sk 2 st. CL in the next st. Ch 3. Sk 2 st.* Repeat from * to * around. Join to the first st. (8 CL, 8 sc)

Round 6-8: Repeat Rounds 2-4.

Round 9: Ch 1. Sc in the same st as the ch 1. Ch 2. Sk 2 st. CL in the next st. Ch 2. Sk 2 st. *Sc in the next st. Ch 2. Sk 2 st. CL in the next st. Ch 2. Sk 2 st.* Repeat from * to * around. Join to the first st. (8 CL, 8 sc)

Round 14: Ch 1. Sc dec around. (8) Fasten off leaving a long tail to cinch the top of this section closed. Cinch the top of this section. Weave in all ends. Optional: Add a pom pom to the top of that hat.
