I’m so excited to be part of the MMCAL hosted by Jennifer of A Crocheted Simplicity. I love the idea of CALS but don’t participate in many because of how long they last. Sometimes the time I have doesn’t match up with the timeline of the CAL, or I end up getting distracted by another project. What I love about these Mini-Mystery Crochet Alongs that Jennifer has started is that they are QUICK! A little bit of yarn and small pieces over 2-3 days and you’ve got yourself a nice little completed projected. I also believe that smaller projects help keep your crojo in check when you’ve been working on other projects, so if you ever feel like you are in a bit of crochet funk, go through one of her MMCALs on her blog and work your way through it! ❤

This MMCAL was posted in 3 segments but has now been combined into 1 full pattern.
The yarn that I chose for this project was Lionbrand Mandala in the colorway Wood Nymph. It is 100% acrylic and a #3 weight dk yarn. Want to know why I chose this particular yarn? Honestly? I had a partial cake leftover from another project and wanted to use a little bit more of it up (I STILL have some left, so I might make a few more of this particular project that we are working on! Hooray for using up leftover yarn!)
The yarn fiber that you choose isn’t too important. Here are some of the yarns that my testers used: Lionbrand Cupcake DK, Lionbrand Ice Cream, James C Brett Twinkle Fashion DK.

Materials Needed:
- 100 yards of #3 weight dk yarn
- G 4.0 mm hook
- 8 inch metal ring
- Measuring tape
- Yarn needle
- Scissors
Don’t know where to find a metal ring? Here are a few options!!
For the metal ring, there are many places that you can find them. Hobby Lobby has several sizes located in their macrame aisle (you can’t miss it. There are fake feathers and masks along the aisle as well. Michaels has wooden ones aisles, according to one of my testers, but we are unsure of the exact measurements of the rings. Joanns also carries some, but I believe that all of the sizes are odd numbers (7 inch, 9 inch, etc.) If this is the only location you are able to find a ring, please message me and we will get the pattern figured out for you, so it will work out! 😀 Also, good ol’ amazon has many different options when you search metal ring or macrame ring. My one tester from Canada ordered hers from there and got a pack of multiple. It arrived within a couple of days. If all else fails, an embroidery ring will also work, however, it will be a bit more difficult to work around and will use a tad bit more yarn than listed.
Stitch Glossary: MC-magic circle, ch-chain, sc-single crochet, hdc-half double crochet, dc-double crochet, tr-treble crochet
Skill Level: Easy
Gauge
Measures 3-3.25 inches after round 3.
Special Stitches
Shell: (hdc, dc, dc, tr, dc, dc, hdc) in the same stitch or chain space.
Notes
- Ch 3 counts as a dc
- Ch 6 counts as a (dc, ch 3)
- Ch 7 counts as (tr, ch 3)
- Do not chain before shell rounds.
Pattern Instructions
Round 1: MC. Ch 3. Dc 11 in the MC. Join to the top of the ch 3. (12 dc)
Round 2: Ch 6. Dc in same st as the ch 6. Sk 1 st. *(Dc, ch 3, dc) in the next st. Sk 1 st.* Repeat from * to * around. Join to the 3rd ch of the ch 6. (12 dc, 6 ch 3 spaces)
Round 3: Sl st into the next ch 3 space. Shell in the same ch space. *Shell in the next ch space. Repeat from * around. Join to the 1st st. (6 shells)
Round 4: Ch 7. Tr in the space in between the previous shell and the next shell. Sk 3 st. (Dc, ch 3, dc) in the next st. Sk 3 st. *(Tr, ch 3, tr) in the next space in between shells. Sk 3 st. (Dc, ch 3, dc) in the next st. Sk 3 st.* Repeat from * to * around. Join to the 4th ch of the ch 7. (12 dc, 12 tr, 12 ch 3 spaces)
Round 5: Repeat Round 3. (12 shells)
Round 6: Repeat Round 4. (24 dc, 24 tr, 24 ch 3 spaces)
Round 7: Repeat Round 3. (24 shells)
Note: Your circle should measure between 7 and 7.5 inches at this point before attaching it to the metal ring in the next segment.
Round 8: Sl st to the middle tr of the current shell. Ch 1. Sc in the same st as the ch 1 and AROUND the metal ring. Sc 6 around the metal ring. *Sc in the next tr of the next shell and around the metal ring. Sc 6 around the metal ring.* Repeat from * to * around. Join to the 1st st. (168 sc)
Round 9: Ch 6. Dc in the same st as the ch 6. Sk 3 st. *(Dc, ch 3, dc) in the next st. Sk 3 st.* Repeat from * around. Join to the 3rd ch of the ch 6. (84 dc, 42 ch 3 spaces)
Round 10: Repeat Round 3. (42 shells) Fasten off.
Finishing:
- Weave in all ends.
- Cut an 18 inch piece of yarn. Locate the top center of your wall hanging. (The area where you fastened off should be at the bottom of your wall hanging) Loop the yarn piece in between 2 sets of (dc, ch 3, dc). Knot the end of the yarn together.
- Hang up and enjoy!

A plastic ring would work just fine! The metal ones were just the first kind that I found. The ring will be worked over, so you won’t be able to tell what kind of ring was used. 🙂

Hi, Kim! I had a tester try it out, and she was able to go up to a 5.00 mm hook and it worked out! I hope that helps! 🙂

Was there supposed to be a ch between the the shells? I find it hard to sk 3? I sk the hdc,dc,dc,V-stitch in the tr then sk dc,dc,hdc but the the next v-st goes into the next hdc?

Hi, Kim! The next V-st won’t go into the hdc. It will be worked around the top of the hdc if that makes sense? The v-st will go in the space right between the shells from the previous round.

How can I make this without the metal ring?
I want to make it to lay flat on a table

Hi, Sharon. If you would like to do this without the metal ring, what you will have to do is when you get to Round 8 when you’d originally attach your work to the ring, you will instead do chains. So when the pattern tells you to do 6 sc around the ring you will instead do 6 chains and then the sc in the tr of the next shell. Now, depending on how tightly you chain, you may have to play around with your hook sizes for that part. The next round instead of skipping the amount of stitches it says, you’ll skip chains (or possibly the sc that were placed in the tr depending on where the skips hit on the round) instead because that is what your Round 8 will look like. Then continue as the pattern says for the final round. Now keep in mind, I have not made this without the ring, but this is exactly how I would do it if I wanted it as a doily or table decoration. I hope this helps!
