Itty Bitty Butterfly Applique-A Free Pattern

This Itty Bitty Butterfly Applique is a super quick, less than 5 minute, work up perfect for embellishing any project that you want. Change the hook size and yarn weight to change the size of the butterfly to fit your needs!

Itty Bitty Butterfly Applique

Materials needed:

  • 6-10 yards of worsted weight yarn
  • G hook
  • Scissors
  • Yarn needle


Gauge: Not necessary for this project


Stitch Glossary: MC-magic circle, Ch-chain, Sl St- slip stitch, Sc-single crochet, Dc-double crochet



  • Size of butterfly can easily be changed by using a larger hook, or a lighter/heavier weight yarn and the appropriate hook for that yarn.

Round 1: MC. [Ch 5, sc] x4.

Round 2: *Sl st into the next ch 5 loop. Ch 2 (counts as Dc). 7 dc in the same loop.* Repeat from * to * 3 more times. Join to the beginning sl st. Fasten off leaving a long tail to use to sew butterfly onto another project.



Taking a long piece of contrasting color yarn and leaving a tail, wrap around the center of the four wings until you get your desired body size/shape. Tie both ends of the yarn together at the top of the body, (you can decide where this is) leaving 2 strands to serve as antennas. Cut these to your preferred antenna length. Sew onto any project for added embellishment.
